PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic polyketone without leaving impurities under mild condition, by reacting a specific aromatic ether with phosgene in the presence of a fluoroalkanesulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:A polyketone is produced by reacting (A) 1mol of the compound of formula (R<1>-R<12> are H, halogen, hydrocarbon residue or alkoxy; X<1> and X<2> are 0 and/or S; n is 0-5), preferably diphenyl ether, 1,4-diphenoxybenzene, etc., with (B) 0.5-500mol, preferably 1-200mol of phosgene in the presence of (C) a 1-18C fluoroalkanesulfonic acid, preferably trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, etc., in an amount sufficient to act as a reaction solvent, at 0-300 deg.C, preferably 50-250 deg.C, and removing the component C from the reaction product by distillation of by washing with an organic solvent or water.
