PURPOSE:To carry out the through-flow dehydration and drying of coal at low apparatus cost in high efficiency, effectively utilizing an idling sintering apparatus, by supplying exhaust gas of relatively low temperature to a sintering apparatus charged with water-containing coal. CONSTITUTION:Water-containing coal is charged from the chute 8 to the pallet conveyor 2 of the cooler 1 of a combustion apparatus. In the above process, exhaust gas having a temperature of 100-300 deg.C and a concentration of <=5% or a gas heated with a heat-exchanger is sent to the main pipe 4 and the window box 3 with a blower 6, and is made to flow from the box 3 through the pallet conveyor 2 from the bottom upward to effect the contact of the gas with the water-containing coal. The water contained in the coal can be removed by the drying process.
