PURPOSE:To discriminate whether an FM sound signal is recorded or not by detecting the average level of an output that detects amplitude larger than a prescribed level from the output of a peaking circuit that sets the carrier frequency of an FM sound signal as a tuning frequency is detected. CONSTITUTION:A peaking circuit part 32 that is connected to the output side of a reading means that includes magnetic heads 1A and 1B that obtain read signals from a magnetic tape on which an FM luminance signal and a low frequency band chrominance component are recorded and reproducing means 2A and 2B has a peaking characteristic that sets a prescribed frequency within an FM sound frequency band as the tuning frequency. A detection circuit 33 detects a component that has the amplitude larger than the prescribed level of the output signal from the peaking circuit part. A level detection circuit part is obtained by integrating the average level of the detected output by an integrating circuit 34. Based upon the output signal, it is discriminated whether the FM found signal that sets the tuning frequency at the peaking circuit part as the carrier frequency is recorded or not actually on the magnetic tape.
