To input graphic patterns such as handwritten text or drawings, an arrangement is proposed which optically locates the respective position of a pen (2), provided with a light source (3), on an input surface (1). The locating is carried out by using optical channels (4) which are arranged on the side of the input surface (1) and determine the X and Y coordinates of the pen (2). The optical channels (4) can be arranged in several layers above one another or constructed in the form of columns, and they are provided with an optical coding device (7). The light is supplied from the optical channels (4) to opto-electronic transducers (6) by optical devices (5) such as, for example, optical waveguide membranes. <IMAGE>
