PURPOSE:To decrease erroneous correction when an error of >=t+1 characters takes place by using a t-character error correction check matrix as a matrix generating 2t+1 syndromes. CONSTITUTION:In applying 3-character error correction, a reception data D is acted on a check matrix H so as to generate 7 syndromes S. When two- character error exists in equations I, II, the relation of A=0, B=0, C=0, D=0 exists and any of Anot equal to 0, Bnot equal to 0,Cnot equal to 0, Dnot equal to 0 is adopted for multiple error detection of >=3 characters. In adopting Anot equal to 0, it is known from the equation I that syndromes S0-S4 only are required and S5 is not necessary. Thus, in applying t-character error correction, when a check matrix generating 2t+1 syndromes is used, the probability of erroneous correction at multiple error of >=t+1- character in the Galois field GF (2<b>) is 1/2<b>.
