A man-made fibre composed of transparently dyed light-collecting polymer is characterised in that the fibre has pronounced edges in the fibre direction. The fibre cross-section can have a flat thread form or a trilobal form. For the preparation of such a fibre in flat thread form, a process is preferred in which the fibre is produced from a light-collecting polymer film by cutting, cleaving, splitting or fibrillating. On division of the film, the edge sides of the flat thread are exposed such that the fluorescent radiation can emerge there and the fibre obtains the lighting effect according to the invention in this position.
