Damage to an immersed tuyere in an oxygen steelmaking furnace is prevented by (i) blowing a mixt.(4) of a gas-generating powder (3') and a carrier gas(3) through the tuyere to form a layer of a mixt. of increased momentum on the inner peripheral rim and immediately above the tuyere nozzle; and (ii) cooling the tuyere tip by endothermic decomposition of the particulate material while stirring the molten steel by the combined effect of the carrier gas jet, the decomposition prod. gas and the residual undercomposed particulate material.
