PURPOSE:To attain the optimum recognition of various patterns by calculating the distortion of distance for each coordinates in a feature space of an input pattern and outputting the correction value, i.e., the distortion tensor. CONSTITUTION:A distance measurement correction calculating part 18 stores the coordinates of an input pattern in a partial space for calculation of the distance distortion. As a result, the distortion degree is obtained for each coordinates in said partial space of the input pattern. This distortion degree is stored in a proper value dictionary 19 in the form of the corrected value and then discriminated at a discriminating part 15. Then the distortion degree is turned into the data to be added to or subtracted from the resemblance degree outputted from a matching part 14. Thus the part 15 can improve the category discriminating accuracy to the input pattern.
