PURPOSE:To attain recording and reproduction at both standard track and double track modes by arranging a magnetic head of the standard track type specifications and that of the double track type specifications on a slider and exciting the head selectively in interlocking with the mode changeover. CONSTITUTION:Both the magnetic heads where the 1st erase head core 22 is arranged at both sides of the 1st R/W head core 21 constituting the 1st magnetic head in the standard track type specifications and the 2nd erase head core 22' is arranged at both sides of the 2nd R/W head core 21' constituting the 2nd magnetic head in the double track type specifications are arranged on a slider, and based on a mode switching signal from a mode switching signal generator 24, the 1st magnetic head drive circuits 25, 26 are driven at the standard track mode, the 2nd magnetic head drive circuits 27, 28 are driven at the double track mode and the signal is recorded and reproduced in both the standard track and the double track modes.
