In the production of screw connections in mechanical production plants, instances of defective screws can come about inter alia due to the fact that the screw has thread damage or is applied at a slant, or that chips are present in the blind bore. In order to increase the reliability of screw connections, the method according to the invention for monitoring the turning action of a screw in a workpiece provides that after the fastening torque and turning path of the screw Md = f(s) the turning action is also already detected in the screwing phase before achievement of the applying torque Ma and of the turning path s phi by means of the measured-value transmitter for the torque and for the turning path, and the signals obtained in this phase are evaluated in a microprocessor system (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>
