N-Thienyl chloro-acetamide cpds. of formula (I), in which R is 1-4C alkoxy, or 2-4C alkyl, whose 1-4C alkoxy gp. is sepd. by at least 2C atoms from the N atom to which R is linked, R2 and R4 are methyl or ethyl, and R5 is H or methyl, are made by reacting a tetrahydro-thiophen-3-one of formula (IV) with an amine R-NH2.
