NEW MATERIAL:The 2-phenylpyridine derivative of formula I [Y and Z are straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy, CN, 2-(trans-4'-alkylcyclohexyl)ethyl, 2-(p- alkylphenyl)ethyl or 2-(p-alkoxyphenyl)ethyl wherein carbon number of alkyl is 1-12]. EXAMPLE:2-(4-Hexyloxyphenyl)-5-pentylpyridine. USE:A colorless liquid crystal substance having high heat, light chemical and electrical stability, mutual solubility to other nematic liquid crystal or a liquid crystal composition and effective to improve the liquid crystal temperature range and/or electro-optical response and improve the performance of a TV cell for multiplex driving. PREPARATION:The compound of formula III which is one of the compounds of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II (R<1> is alkyl or alkoxy) with the compound of formula RBr (R is alkyl) and hydrolyzing the reaction product.
