PURPOSE:To provide a power transmitting fluid having large value of high temperature viscosity and coefficient of friction by hydrogenating a specific fraction of residual oil in the still produced as a by-product in the preparation of alkylbenzene, i.e. detergent raw material. CONSTITUTION:Distillation is performed to obtain the fraction of 340-365 deg.C b.p. (converted to atmospheric b.p.) from the by-product still residue in preparation of alkylbenzene wherein benzene is alkylated by 10-15C olefin in the presence of catalyst such as hydrogen fluoride, anhydrous aluminum chloride. The obtd. fraction is hydrogenated in the presence of calalyst such as Raney nickel, platinum, at about 20-250 deg.C, and under atmospheric to 100atm pressure to thereby provide a power transmitting fluid. It is pref. to continue the hydrogenation process until the remaining benzene nucleus has reduced to less than about 2mol% (pref. less than 0.5mol%). |
