PURPOSE:To provide the title composition capable of maintaining an excellent flowability in the presence of a small amount of water, by adding a saponification product of a sulfonated styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer having a specific composition as a fluidizing agent in preparing a water slurry of a coal. CONSTITUTION:An intended coal slurry composition is prepared by mixing 100pts.wt. powdered lime with 20-200pts.wt. water and 0.1-5pts.wt. saponifica tion product of a sulfonated styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer in which the molar fraction of sulfonated styrene unit exceeds 50%. The flowability can further be improved by incorporating a compound selected from among a forma lin condensate of naphthalenesulfonate, an olefin/unsaturated dicarboxylate, a polyoxyethylenic compound, a lignin suflonate, a sulfonated melamine resin salt, a formalin condensate of a sulfonated creosote oil, etc.
