PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ketone in good workability, by slurry-polymerizing an aromatic (thio)ether with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide in an aprotic organic solvent in the presence of a finely ground Group III element halide. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic (thio)ether (A) of formula I (wherein R<1>-R<12> are each H or a halogen, a hydrocarbon or an alkoxy, X is a direct bond, O or S and l is 0-2), e.g., diphenyl ether, and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide (B) of formula II (wherein R<13>-R<20> are the same as R<1>-R<12>, Y is a halogen, and m is 0-3), e.g., terephthaloyl chloride, or phosgene are added to an aprotic organic solvent (e.g., methylene chloride). This mixture is slurry-polymerized in the presence of a mechanically finely ground halide of an element of Group III of the periodic table (e.g., anhydrous aluminum trichloride) to obtain an aromatic poly(thio)ether ketone having repeating units of formula III (wherein n=0-1).
