9-(3,4-Dihydroxy butyl) guanine of formula (I) is made by (a) reducing 4-(2-amino 1,6-dihydro 6-oxo-purin-9-yl) 2-hydroxy butyric acid ethyl ester, of formula (II) with sodium borohydride or sodium cyano-borohydride in molar ratio of 1-2:1, in CH2Cl2 at a temp. of 20 deg. C up to reflux temp.; and (b) recrystallising (I) from ethanol or water to obtain it chemically pure.
