NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is group formula II- formula IV; R1 and R2 are methyl or hydroxymethyl; R3 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso- propyl, n-pentyl, benzyl, ethynyl, etc.). EXAMPLE:1,4-Dihydro-alpha-naphthoic acid tert-butylamide. USE:Herbicide effective against the weeds in paddy field (e.g. cockspur-grass, bulrush, etc.) and in plowed land (e.g. large crab-grass, wild spinach, etc.). It exhibits high ativity at a low dose especially in paddy field and has no phytotoxicity in spite of high activity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula RCOZ [Z is OR4 or halogen (R4 is H or 1-10C alkyl)] with the amine compound of formula V in the absence of solvent or in an organic solvent, optionally in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium hydroxide) at 0-200 deg.C for 0.1-5hr.
