[Also in Group XXIII] A crucible furnace for melting glass comprises a crucible 10 formed with discharge orifices 14 and defining a heating space 65 with a steel sheel 37 lined with refractory 46, and combustion chambers 50 opening tangentially into the space 65 through elongated restricted ports 64. Diametrically opposed off takes 69 are provided near the bottom of the space 65. The combustion chambers 50 are of frusto-conical shape as shown and have a gas inlet 56 and ignition device 68. The glass issuing from orifices 14 is drawn into fibres and formed into a mat with a thermosetting binder (see Group XXIII). |
