PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for especially an organic electrically conductive material, etc., in high yield and purity on an industrial scale, by carrying out the dehydrative condensation of a diarylamine with a resorcinol at a specific ratio in an inert gas atmosphere in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An m-hydroxytriarylamine is produced by the dehydrative con densation of 1.0mol of a diaryhlamine with 1.5-5.0mol of a resorcinol in an insert gas atmosphere using phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid and/or phospho rous acid ester as a catalyst, at >=150 deg.C, preferably 170-230 deg.C. The decomposi tion of the resorcinol can be suppressed under the above temperature condition. USE:An intermediate for an electron-donative colorless dye of formula (Ar1-Ar4 are aryl or heterocyclic residue; ring A is benzene ring, naphthalaene ring, pyridine ring or pyrimidine ring; Ar1 and Ar2 or Ar3 and Ar4 may together form heterocyclic ring) and useful as a recording material. |
