PURPOSE:To allow a solid-state image pickup element to fulfil a shutter function without an OFCG by setting the shutter time with the aid of the continuous time of a sensor gate voltage. CONSTITUTION:Since an electrode voltage +Vg is always applied to the SG of a photodetecting part at a normal video action, the potential of a TG6 is higher than those of the photodetecting part 1 and the OFCG 5a. However, when only the SG voltage of the photodetecting part 1 is changed to -Vg, only the potential of the photodetecting part 1 is changed to the state as shown by a broken line, and the leakage of a charge to a vertical transfer part 2 from the photodetecting part 1 occurs. In order to prevent said leakage, the potential of the TG6 has to be higher, and a voltage applied to the vertical transfer part 2 is set to a value lower than an SG voltage to raise the potential. When the negative voltage is given to the vertical transfer part 2 in such a way, the potential of the photodetecting part 1 is lower than that in the vicinity without fail. Especially a substrate deep part has the lowest potential, whereby the signal charge of the photodetecting part 1 can be securely discharged to the substrate deep part of the photodetecting part 1.
