PURPOSE:To obtain a stabilized phenol alkylene oxide adduct, by adding lactic acid and/or a lactic acid salt to a phenol alkylene oxide adduct useful as a surfactant, thereby suppressing the change of odor and quality with time. CONSTITUTION:A phenol alkylene oxide adduct produced by the addition of an alkylene oxide to a phenolic compound such as nonylphenol, octylphenol, etc., is compounded with 0.001-5pts.wt., preferably 0.05-1pt.wt. (based on 100pts.wt. of the alkylene oxide adduct) of lactic acid and/or a lactic acid salt, preferably an alkali metal lactate, especially sodium lactate or potassium lactate and the pH of the aqueous solution is adjusted to preferably 4-9, especially 5-7 to obtain the stabilized alkylene oxide adduct having extremely low change of carbonyl value, acid value, pH and odor with time.
