PURPOSE:To form the pipe end upsetting in the prescribed up-length by changing the position in the dies axial direction of a movable stopper based on the thickness measured value of the pipe end by providing movable stopper on the dies end in case of upsetting the pipe end of a metallic pipe with the die and mandrel. CONSTITUTION:The metallic pipe 2 to be upsetted is put into the upper die 1 and lower die 1' and the tip of a mandrel 3 is inserted. In this case a movable stopper 6 is fitted in the axial direction of the die on the front face of the upper and lower dies 1, 1', the thickness on each the metallic pipe to be upsetted is measured in advance and the upsetting is performed by moving the mobile stopper 6 in the dies axial direction so as to make the necessary up-allowance U or up-length (l) based on the measured value thereof. The front face of a block 4 is checked by the stopper 6 in its movement, the up-allowance is accordingly determined and the upsetting in the prescribed up-length is enabled.
