PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer which forms thermotropic crystal and provides a molded article having high modulus of elasticity and high strength, by forming an oligomer from a specific oligo(poly)ester and a specific hydroxycarboxylic acid, and polymerizing the oligo(poly)ester in the presence of a tin compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An oligomer is formed from an oligo(poly)ester shown by the formula I (>=60mol% R<1> is 8-20C bifunctional aromatic hydrocarbon group wherein >=4C exist between carbonyl groups, and <=40mol% R<1> is 6-20C bifunctional aromatic hydrocarbon group, etc.; R<2> is 2-40C bifunctional aliphatic hydrocarbon group, 4-20C bifunctional alicyclic hydrocarbon group, 6-20C aromatic ring-forming bifunctional aromatic hydrocarbon group, or polyalkylene oxide bifunctional group having 80-8,000mol.wt.) and a hydroxycarboxylic acid shown by the formula II (R<3> is as shown for R<1>), and the oligomer is polymerized by the use of a tin compound as a catalyst.
