PURPOSE:To make inspection and maintenance performable with self-propulsion of a carrier without requiring a ceiling or ground rail or the like, by installing a guide member along a circulating travel course of the self-propelled varrier, and also installing a detector, sensing the guide member, in the carrier. CONSTITUTION:A carrier is formed with a lower frame 2, a longitudinal frame 3 and so on, and an automobile M is set up within the frame. And, a driving wheel 5 and auxiliary wheels 6 are installed in the lower frame 2, while a motor 7 driving this driving wheel 5 and a reduction gear 8 or the like are installed there. In addition, a body holding lifter 11 having plural pieces of rollers 10 is liftably installed in the longitudinal frame 3. In this case, a guide member 20 is installed on a floor surface of various work stations A-D, and each signal line 21 stopping the carrier 1 temporarily is installed. And, the guide member 20 is made up of an optical tape or the like, and a detector 22 for light or the like is installed in the carrier 1, making it travelable. In addition, a detector 23 of the signal 21 is installed in the carrier 1.
