PURPOSE:To save the memory capacity of an electronic dictionary by collecting the words having the ending common with each other at a specific area within the dictionary after excluding said ending and searching the corresponding area after deleting the ending of an input word if contains. CONSTITUTION:When the word spelling is checked with a Western word processor, the words are first supplied by keys and stored temporarily in a working memory. At the same time, it is checked whether or not the plural form of a noun or the ending 's' of the third person of a verb is contained in an input character string. Then said the plural form or the ending 's' if contained is compared with the 1st block. If no coincidence is obtained from the comparison, a basic form excluding the ending 's' is compared with the 2nd block storing such basic forms. Then other blocks are searched if no coincidence is obtained from the 2nd comparison.
