PURPOSE:To relieve the load of software and to decrease the quantity of hardware by generating an inverted signal for the display of '+' and '-' based on a borrow signal from a counter at the most significant digit. CONSTITUTION:An up signal phiup and a down signal phidn fed from a displacement sensor SNS or the like are switched by the borrow signal outputted from a counter CNTn at the most significant digit of plural BCD counters CNT1-CNTn connected in cascade and they are fed to the counter CNT1 at the least significant digit by a signal switching circuit DSL and the inverted signal for display of '+' and '-' is generated based on the borrow signal from the counter CNTn of the most significant digit. That is, the counters CNT1-CNTn count always an absolute value. Thus, when the count moves from a positive to a negative value, it is not required to use a microcomputer or the like to operate a negative quantity based on the BCD counters CNT1-CNTn as a conventional system. Then the load of the software is relieved.
