PURPOSE:To discriminate a feature area with high accuracy by setting minor areas with small spaces secured among them so that an overlapped part is produced between minor areas and discriminating the feature area for each small area. CONSTITUTION:The feature quantity is calculated for the 1st minor area 21 of (mXm) picture elements in a picture 20. This feature quantity is compared with the prescribed threshold value to decide that the area 21 is equal to a feature area. Then the point '1' is added to each picture element in the minor area. While the point '-1' is added to those picture element if no feature area is decided. Then a minor area 22 is set with a right shift by a picture element, and the decision is carried out in the same way for a feature area. Such an operation is repeated up to the final minor area 27. Then the points are totalized for each picture element. A feature area is defined with the picture elements having the totalized point larger than zero; while no feature area is defined with picture elements having the totalized point smaller than zero respectively.
