PURPOSE:A linear polyarylene thioether is subjected to continuous melt extrusion into fibers, continuous drawing and continuous heat-setting under specific conditions to produce the titled fibers with specific values of melt viscosity, filament thickness, tensile strength, tensile elasticity without yarn breakage and fluffing. CONSTITUTION:A linear polyarylene thioether of 6,000-20,000 poise melt viscosity (at 310 deg.C and 200sec<-1> shear rate), preferably a copolymer from more than 50mol% of the recurring unit of formula I and 5-30mol% of the recurring units of formula II, is subjected to continuous melt extrusion into fibers and continuous drawing. Then, the yarn is continuously heat-set over the temperature 100 deg.C lower than the melting point of the polymer for 0.02-100sec to give the objective fibers of 1-50mu filament diameter, more than 40kg/mm<2> tensile strength, more than 500kg/mm<2> tensile elasticity and more than 20kg/mm<2> tensile strength at 200 deg.C. |
