PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of monodisperse polymer particles of a relatively large particle diameter, by mixing an aqueous dispersion of seed particles with an organic swelling aid of a specified property, allowing the seed particles to swell by the absorption of the aid, adding a polymerizable monomer to this dispersion to allow the seed particles to adsorb it and polymerizing the monomer in this dispersion. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous dispersion of seed particles comprising polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate or the like is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of a swelling aid comprising an organic compound having a wager solubility <=0.02wt% and a MW <= 5,000 (e.g., lauroyl peroxide or stearoyl methacrylate) and dispersed in a state of particles of a particle diameter smaller than that of the seed particles. After the seed particles are allowed to absorb the swelling aid to form swollen particles, this dispersion is mixed with a polymerizable monomer (e.g., styrene) to allow the swollen particles to adsorb it and the monomer in the resulting dispersion is polymerized to obtain monodisperse polymer particles of a relatively large particle diameter of about 1-100mum.
