A device has a conveyor belt which is driven by means of a stepping motor which is in its turn composed of a plurality of rotating rollers (8, 16) which are arranged at equal distances from one another and are provided with grooves. The grooves of two rollers which are mounted alongside one another make reception of the onions (18) possible. The latter are aligned along their longitudinal axes, parallel to the longitudinal axes of the rollers, by rotation of the latter. The stepping motor of the conveyor belt makes it possible to position the transverse row of onions, which are made to rotate by the pair of supporting rollers, beneath a row of cutting blades (19) which are movable in the longitudinal direction of the conveyor belt. The said cutting blades (19) perform a cutting action around the outermost layer of the onions. A jet of air then effects complete separation of the outermost onion layer, which has already been cut into. <IMAGE>
