PURPOSE:A pitch containing specific amounts of carbonaceous fractions, respectively, soluble in n-heptane, insoluble in n-heptane but soluble in benzene and soluble in benzene and having high volume content of optically anisotropic phase is made into filaments, preoxidized and carbonized to give carbon fibers of high strength and high elasticity. CONSTITUTION:An optically anisotropic carbonaceous pitch which contains 2-20wt% of a fraction (O-component) soluble in n-heptane, 15-45wt% of second fraction (A component) insoluble in n-heptane but soluble in benzene and the rest insoluble in benzene and has more than about 90vol% of optically anisotropic phase is subjected to spinning into filaments, preoxidation and carbonization to give the objective carbon fibers. The C/H atomic ratios in the O and A components are preferably 1.3-1.6 and 1.4-1.7, respectively.
