In efficient printers, in addition to a single-sheet feed device, a delivery device with a plurality of sorting compartments is also essential. Known printers fitted with these devices still have a complicated construction and require a large amount of space, the delivery device not being arranged integrated in the printer. The invention is based on the object of providing a printer which has an individual-sheet paper feed device and a delivery device for delivering the printed sheets in a number of sorting compartments, said printer being of space-saving and compact construction. This object is achieved in that the housing (21) of the printing mechanism is arranged so that it can be fixed on a lower cabinet (29), in that the delivery device (34) has sorting compartments (35) which are arranged vertically one above the other and are inserted through an opening (36) into a compartment (37) in the lower cabinet (29). This results in a printer of compact construction, in which the sorting compartments are accessible only by opening a door (48) which closes the compartment (37). As a result, dissemination of secret documents can also be reliably prevented. <IMAGE>
