NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula (X is -OOH or OH). EXAMPLE:2-(2-Hydroperoxy-2-propyl)naphthalene-6-carboxylic acid. USE:Synthetic intermediate for 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6-carboxylicacid useful as a polymeric material for fibers and other molded articles. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced by reacting 2- isopropylnaphthalene-6-carboxylic acid with molecular oxygen in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of a persulfate catalyst (e.g. ammonium persulfate) under heating. The amount of the persulfate catalyst is 5-30wt%, preferably 10-15wt% based on the 2-isopropylnaphthalene-6-carboxylic acid.
