A battery plate envelope (22b) is fabricated by pushing a battery plate (20) edgewise into a cut sheet (22a) of microporous material having a width greater than the battery plate (20) so that the sheet folds to provide overlapping edges (20c) which are then sealed by compressing between sealing gears (80a, 80b; 82a, 82b) on opposed shafts (84, 86). In apparatus for fabricating the envelopes (22b), the sealing gears (84, 86) are in a sealing section (18) and the apparatus may also include a microporous sheet material feed section (12), a sizing section (14) for cutting the sheet (22) and a battery plate feed section (16). |
