<p>A sensor (1) for detecting changes in or monitoring the level of a chemical parameter of interest, comprising an optical fibre cable (2) having a sensing segment (5) that is a film coating of a support matrix (7) on the core (6) of the optical fibre cable with any sheathing and cladding removed, on which support matrix is immobilized an indicator compound having spectral characteristics sensitive to the parameter of interest, wherein the support matrix consists of a material permeable to the species of interest.
