A holding device for single glass panes or multiple glass panes is to be designed to the effect that use is made of profiles which are erected with low material use and have great breaking strength, which are corrosion-proof and prevent condensation-water formation. To this end, it is proposed to design the profiles as extensively closed metal profiles which are equipped with a foamed-material covering and the mutually facing base surfaces of which are formed by edge strips which are bent off from their sides and run towards one another in a common plane and which enclose an exposed central slot, the profiles being clamped together in each case to form supports by square elements which in their height take into consideration the thickness of the panes to be inserted, and the edge strips being engaged around by sealing strips clamping the panes.
