PURPOSE:To improve the electromagnetic conversion characteristic of a magnetic recording medium and to prevent drop-out by forming a Japanese lacquer coating film on the surface of an elastic roll in a roll device for giving a specular surface to the magnetic recording medium which forms a magnetic layer to a specular surface. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording medium 1 where the magnetic layer is formed on a nonmagnetic supporting body consisting of a polyester film or the like is fed out of a supply roll 2 and passes between an upper metallic roll 3 and an elastic roll 4 and between the elastic roll 4 and a lower metallic roll 5 and is wound up around a take-up roll 6. The elastic roll 4 is obtained by forming a Japanese lacquer coating film 4b on the outside peripheral surface of a metallic roll body 4a, and a roll pressurizing surface is formed by this coating film 4b. Since the hardness of the elastic roll 4 is raised, the roll surface is finished to a sufficient specular surface, and the magnetic recording medium having the specular surface is obtained to improve the electromagnetic conver sion characteristic. Further, drop-out due to flaws on the surface of the magnetic layer is prevented.
