PURPOSE:To eliminate bad influences of dirt, dust, etc. other than an original picture by detecting the picture density levels of the original picture and invalidating levels higher or lower than a prescribed level out of detected picture density levels. CONSTITUTION:A CPU 211 consisting of a microcomputer takes in picture signals from latches 205 and 208 synchronously with a synchronizing signal MS for every one main scanning line to detect the lowest density level (white peak) and the highest density level (black peak) of each main scanning line. By this constitution, picture density levels of the original are detected to process the picture signal obtained by reading the original on a basis of detected picture density levels, and levels higher or lower than a prescribed level out of detected picture density levels are invalidated to eliminate effectively band influences due to dirt, dust, etc. other than the original picture, and an optimum picture processing is performed.
