An extrusion machine comprises a mandrel, a die holder removably securable within the machine and housing a die adjustably positioned with respect to the mandrel, and means connected to the die holder and adapted to bear against the die for preventing leakage of the extrusion material between the die and the die holder and for securing the die against inward movement whereby the die and the die holder can be removed from and reinserted into the apparatus without disturbing the die adjustment. A solid mandrel may be used for the extrusion of plastic tubing, or a hollow mandrel, through which articles to be coated are passed, for applying plastic sheaths to cable cores. In the example shown, a die holder head 18, disposed about the die 15, is secured to an inner die retaining boss 19 of the die holder base 11 by screws 20 and has a flanged portion 21 engaging a flanged end portion 16 of the die 15. Intermediate the boss 19 and head 18 is a cup-shaped metal diaphragm 22 which engages the die flange 16. Pressure of the extrusion material 17 forces the diaphragm 22 against the die 15 and secures it against axial movement. A threaded clamp ring 25 is screwed into the extruder head 10 to hold the die holder base 11 in a fixed position. Clamp screws 26 inserted through the ring 25 engage an outer die retaining boss 27 and force the die holder base 11 against the extruder head 10 so as to provide a seal 28 to prevent any extrusion material from entering into the head and to ensure an accurate setting of the die holder in the extruder cavity 12. The orientation of the die holder head 18 with respect to the die holder base 11, and of the latter with respect to the extruder head 10, are maintained by locating pins (not shown). Two pairs of opposed adjusting screws 30 extend transversely through the die holder head 18 to contact the die 15 for the lateral adjustment thereof. During the turning of these screws, the die flange slides between the die holder head flange 21 and the diaphragm 22 creating a seal 24 which prevents any leakage of extrusion material 17 into the cavity 32 between the die 15 and die holder head 18.
