PURPOSE:To read properly a desired area by setting an index an a standard for the reading position of a reading head and correcting the variance of position between the index and the sensor part of the reading head. CONSTITUTION:A reading original 52 is wound around a platen roll 50 of a picture reader, and the surface of an original is read by a focusing optical transmitter array 76 and formed into an image to a reading sensor 78 while moving a carrier 58 along a guide 56. The correction of positions is carried out to obtain coincidence at the start of the reading action between a position (a) on the original picture corresponding to an index 72 set on a reading head 66 as a standard and a position (b) read by the sensor 78 on the original picture. So that an operator can correct the variance between these positions (a) and (b). Thus a desired area can be read properly.
