PURPOSE:To accurately detect a crank angle while distinguishing each process of an engine, by generating the first reference signal corresponding to a reference position with the rotation of a crank shaft other than a unit angle signal. CONSTITUTION:A crank angle detection apparatus is equipped with three signal generators 20, 30, 40 and a unit signal Ne is generated from the unit angle signal generator 20 at every unit rotary angle of 180 deg. or less of a crank shaft 11 and a first reference signal G1 is generated from the first reference signal generator 30 with the rotation of the crank shaft 11 while a second reference signal G2 is generated from the second reference signal generator 40 with the rotation of a cam shaft 12. Therefore, if the second reference signal G2 is gener ated in a wide angular range between the first reference signal G1 generated corresponding to a reference position and the first reference signal G1 generated immediately before said signal G1, the reference position can be accurately detected and a crank angle can be accurately detected while each process of an engine is distinguished.
