PURPOSE:To realize a high resolution by the limited number of picture elements, and also to improve the durability by providing one piece or more of double refraction plates whose refractive index is varied in accordance with an impressed voltage, and varying a position of an optical image. CONSTITUTION:Incident lights 11-17 are made incident on a solid-state image pickup element 1 having photoelectric converting parts 2-4 through two pieces of double refraction plates 5, 6. In the first field, a voltage for causing a double refraction is impressed to only the plate 5, and a voltage for causing no double refraction is impressed to the plate 6. In this case, normal lights 22, 24 and 26, and abnormal lights 32, 34 and 36 corresponding to the incident lights 12, 14 and 16 are made incident on the photoelectric converting parts 2-4. In the second field, only the double refraction plate 6 is made to cause a double refraction. In this case, lights corresponding to the incident lights 42, 44 and 46 are made incident on the converting parts 2-4. Accordingly, an incident optical image of a part which is shifted by 1/2 of a distance between each converting part 2-4 can be brought to image pickup, and the resolution can be raised.
