NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I [R is CnH2n+1' or CnH2n+1O (n is 1-4)]. EXAMPLE:2-Methyl-4'-methoxy-4-(4'-methoxycinnamyloxy)azobenzene. USE:Useful as a stationary phase for a column of gas chromatography, etc. For example, effective for separating isomers of xylene or naphthalene substituted substance, cis- and trans-isomers, and conjugated double bond isomers which were not easily separated by a conventional procedure. PREPARATION:An azo compound shown by the formula II is reacted with a 4-methoxycinnamic acid halide shown by the formula III (X is halogen, prefer ably Cl) under a dehydrohalogenating condition to give a compound shown by the formula I. The reaction is carried out in equimolar amounts and the amount of the compound shown by the formula III used is 1-2 times the molar amount of the compound shown by the formula II.
