PURPOSE:To obtain quinolinic acid useful as an intermediate for the production of pressure-sensitive dye, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield and purity, with reduced amount of ruthenium, by oxidizing quinoline with ruthenium tetraoxide in the presence of a specific compound without using a solvent. CONSTITUTION:Quinolinic acid is produced in a yield of preferably >=80% by oxidizing 1mol of quinoline in the presence of (A) >=9mol of a hypochlorous acid salt, (B) >=5mol of one or more alkali metal hydroxide selected from NaOH and KOH, and (C) 5X10<-5>-1X10<-4>mol of a ruthenium compound selected from ruthenium tetraoxide, ruthenium trioxide and ruthenium dioxide, at 20-70 deg.C for 5-50hr without using an organic solvent. PREPARATION:Ruthenium tetraoxide is used conventionally as an oxidizing agent of quinolin. In the present reaction, ruthenium trioxide and ruthenium dioxide is oxidized to ruthenium tetraoxide with the hypochlorous acid salt in the reaction system and accordingly, the amount of ruthenium can be de creased.
