PURPOSE:To shortern the period of time required for a processing relating to a retracting action, by providing a retraction positioning means for calculating a retracting position for a printing head in accordance with the size and the insertion position of a printing medium and for impressing a signal on a printing head driving part. CONSTITUTION:Prior to printing, the head 4 is moved from a left end position P1 to a right end position P2. In conjunction with the movement of the head, a left end part digit place calculating part 11 and a right end part digit place calculating part 12 in a medium size and insertion position circuit 1 are operated, and a reading on a sensor 5 fitted to the head 4 is read. Since a digit place signal according to the movement of the head is impressed on the circuit 1 by a current position controlling part 6, it is discriminated that, for example, the maximum size printing medium 15 the insertion position of which ranges from the 10th digit place to the 90th digit place is inserted, the left-side retracting position P1 is set at the 5th digit place, while the right-side retracting position P2 is set at the 95th digit place,and signals indicting this setting are impressed on a retraction positioning circuit 2. Accordingly, the retracting positions P1, P2 are determined, and the moving range of the head 4 is prescribed. |
