The invention relates to monoclonal antibodies which recognise core protein from lympadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) and to hybridomas which secrete them. Monoclonal antibodies which recognise LAV p13, p18, p25 and p55 proteins are described. The monoclonal antibodies are valuable for detecting the corresponding proteins or polypeptides in mixtures which contain them. When the antibodies are immobilised on an insoluble support, they can be used for purifying the corresponding polypeptides from mixtures which contain them. <IMAGE>
