The present invention relates to a grinder intended for grinding raised features localised on a surface of a shaped member, and particularly for grinding an excess of weld due to the mutual assembly of two rails of a railway track. A portable longitudinal structural assembly 1 groups together a motor unit 3 and a grinding head 4 provided with a cup wheel 41 driven rotationally about a transverse axis 37 of the device; a handle 8 of the motor unit 3 and a handle 70 of the grinding head 4 enable the assembly 1 to be simultaneously grasped in both hands 11, 70 of a user; advantageously, the grinding wheel 41 may be placed in an inverted position. The grinder thus designed has improved flexibility and safety of use. <IMAGE>
