PURPOSE:To obtain an odorless, highly stereoregular polyolefin good in particle shape, by polymerizing an alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst obtained by combining a specified solid catalyst component with an organoaluminum compound and an organosilicon compound. CONSTITUTION:A magnesium alkoxide, a titanate ester and an alcohol are dissolved by mixing and heating them in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. The obtained solution is reacted with agitation with a silicon halide and an organic acid ester to precipitate a solid product. This solid product is reacted with a titanium halide and/or a vanadium halide, and the resulting reaction product is washed with an inert hydrocarbon. The resulting solid catalyst component is combined with an organoaluminum compound component and an Si-O-C bond-containing organosilicon compound component to prepare a catalyst. An alpha-olefin is polymerized in the presence of this catalyst to obtain a polyolefin.
