High-voltage interior substation with decompression volume

A high-voltage interior substation 10 is compartmentalised with metal partitions 28, 30. The compartments 20, 34, 42 communicate by way of shutters 66 with a decompression volume 64 provided with orifices 68 for external evacuation. During internal arcing in one of the compartments the gases compressed by the action of the arc escape towards the decompression volume 64 thereby limiting the rise in pressure in the compartment affected by the fault. The shutters 66 prevent any reflow of contaminated gas from the decompression volume 64 to the uncontaminated compartments. The decompression volume can be constituted by an additional room in the building or by unused compartments inside the building 10. <IMAGE>
