In an electric light fitting, especially for street lighting, employing an elongated light source and a refractor having two sets of refracting elements on opposite sides of the source to concentrate the light about two planes extending downwards on opposite sides of the fitting at 10 degrees-20 degrees below the horizontal. one or more reflectors are mounted directly below the light source so as to intercept part of the downwardly directed light and spread it sideways and to allow part of the light emitted directly downwards by the source to pass unobstructed downwards from the fitting. The fitting, which may conveniently be used with the light source described in Specification 845,617 comprising two U-shaped sodium vapour, discharge lamps 12 mounted side by side in a common enclosure 11 with the limbs lying at the corners of a square, comprises a canopy 9 from which depends a trough shaped envelope 1 having outwardly inclined plane sides 2 carrying refractor plates 5 and joined by a part-cylindrical bottom on which rests a reflecting device consisting of two elongated plates 15 e.g. of polished aluminium, joined by metallic strips 16, the inner edge of the plates 15 being separated by a gap and lying directly below the limbs of the tubes 12. The device can be used also with a single centrally arranged tube. |
